Ahmady’s approach is holistic in that her treatment aims at the specific pattern that is unique to each patient. In classic Chinese medicine the disease of Psoriasis is termed (Bai bi) as in the White Sore, or loose skin tinea (Song pi xuan) and dry tinea (Gang xuan). In Western medicine, the cause of psoriasis is still not clear although it is believed to be a hereditary skin condition that is triggered by infections or psychogenic factors. In Traditional Chinese medicine, the casual basis for psoriasis is pre-existing deficiency at the nutritive and blood levels that provokes wind and dryness, such that the skin loses its nourishment. Chinese Medicine sees the attacks of pathogenic wind as a contributing factor in the early stages of psoriasis, casting disharmony between the protective and nutritive levels, and disrupting the flow of qi (Chi meaning energy) and blood so that the pathogenic factors become lodged in the tissue and skin. Another factor is that pre-existing damp-heat may smolder and accumulate in the tissue and skin, thus causing the lesions. As the disease progresses, the pathogenic wind transforms into heat, consuming and injuring the qi and blood such that blood deficiency and blood dryness results and exacerbate the condition. Another possible result of deficiency at the nutritive and blood levels is the impeded flow of qi and blood, which leads to stagnation in the tissue and skin, thus forming lesions. Psoriasis may also be caused by impairment of the Liver and Kidneys, or by disharmony between the Penetrating (Chong) and Conception (Ren) vessels. (These are energetic and systemic relationships between these channels and organs) Main clinical patterns are, pathogenic wind in qi and blood level heat in the blood level, blood dryness, blood stasis, damp-heat, Fire and heat toxins, and liver and kidney insufficiency. Treatment principal varies according to the particular pattern that the patient is presenting. Lida Ahmady has a Master of Science in Traditional Oriental Medicine and is NCCAOM Board certified Chinese Herbalist. She became interested in treating Psoriasis because several of her friends suffered from Psoriasis for years. Treatment duration is assessed during the first few visits. Depending on the case, treatment periods may be anywhere from one month to one year. On average its 2 to 4 months in duration.
